The new Vienna-Trieste rail link coming soon

11/11/2025

From 14 December, you can easily reach your home by train

On 14 December, the new European railway timetable will come into effect. On this occasion, Austrian Railways (ÖBB) will introduce the new Railjet Express high-speed service, which will connect Vienna to Trieste with a competitive journey time and a promotional ticket price of only €23.30.

The fast connection via Tarvisio will replace the traditional Vienna-Ljubljana-Trieste route. The journey will take around six and a half hours, almost three hours less than before, competing with road and air transport. In fact, the opening of the Koralmbahn, the high-speed railway line between Graz and Klagenfurt, will radically change mobility in the Alpine region, opening up new prospects for international connections.

‘The December timetable change marks the beginning of a new era for rail transport in Austria. The Koralmbahn will reduce distances and make the train the fastest and most sustainable choice for travel to the south,’ said Peter Hanke, Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure.

The direct train will depart daily from Vienna at 6.53 a.m. and from Trieste at 2.22 p.m., stopping at some of the main cities in Friuli Venezia Giulia and southern Austria, including Trieste Airport station. A decidedly comfortable, scenic and sustainable journey that will further strengthen relations between our region and neighbouring Austria.

The Austrian Railjet is a long-distance train that reaches speeds of 230 km/h and is already used on international routes to Italy and Central European countries. With this new connection, Trieste will be even more connected to the centre of Europe, and it will be possible to travel from door to door safely and with all modern comforts.
